North Eastern Railroad Passenger Activity (c) 2004.

Nor ‘Easterner Series

-----------------------------------------------------------

Work Order: NENE-120-NE01

Time: 3pm

Season: Autumn

Weather: Clear

Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes

Train: NERR SW1500 #1056

Class: 1

-----------------------------------------------------------

Work Order Overview:

The “Nor ‘Easterner” is an intra-divisional passenger service servicing the North East Division of vNERR, leaving Philadelphia Station in the morning at 8am.

Our objective in this first of the series of work orders is to perform the switching duties to bring this passenger consist together.  We need you to have the consist – in the correct order - parked in the Wash Track at Wilmington East yard, by 4pm, so the cleaning shift coming on roster has a train sitting ready to clean up for tomorrow’s run.

Your call sign for this order is #1056 and you are using the trusty SW1500 from the NERR stable.

Notes for Engineers / Work Order Details:

Winsmere Yard (Dispatch will perform switching)

Track #7 - Pick up – 32794-0 & 32794-1

Track #2 – Pick up – 32774-0 to 4 inclusive

Drop off assembled train at Wash Track, with the Sightseer carriage end of consist at the Philadelphia end of the Wash Track – i.e. whole consist facing backwards.

The train has to be built in this order specifically so it will be “pointing” the correct way for departure when it’s pushed into Philadelphia Station.

The assembled order should be as follows:

Philadelphia End (Northern) of Wash Track

32794-0 - Sightseer (398)

Switching 101 – NENE-120-NE01

This guide is included to assist anyone new to switching, or for those poor crazed individuals who are remotely interested in what was running through my mind when I planned and wrote this activity.

If you are keen to go it alone, please use the main description document to establish a switching/marshalling process of your own, there are as you know, more than one way to achieve objectives.

Here was the run as I planned and intended it:

The first part of the activity is straight forward, just follow the path.  When you arrive in the Wilmington West yard, the yard controller announces all his people are on smoko and you are on your own.

Continue forward.  From the point where you get the message, take the second track to the left.

Then proceed, round the back of the engine shed to the outbound series of tracks.  Take the second siding in, which is Outbound 4.

Drop what you are hauling towards the end of the siding.

Then pull forward to the yard limit and reverse into the siding that runs back to Repair Shop 2.  Pick up the Transitional Sleepers and Sleeper cars, pull forward just enough to clear the points to reverse to Repair Shop 1 and pick up the three baggage cars.

After a while running on routes, there are some areas that are somewhat tricky.  This is one.  You will need to back up a bit from picking up the baggage cars and then pull forward.  However, secret yard stuff happens and I found the point reset to straight ahead. X-Files 101 at work!!  You will need to give the engine a bit of power to pull through the points…but watch your speed eh?

OK, leave the diner car where it is for now and pull all the way forward to the yard limit so we can head back and start compiling the train.

Don’t forget to <TAB> to get clearance.

Back the rear of your consist to Outbound 5.  Drop the three baggage cars into that siding.

Then pick up your original consist and connect the four coach cars onto the baggage cars.

Cut the lounge car onto the rear of the coaches.

Then drop what you are carrying back onto Outbound 4 and do a short run back over and pick up the Diner car.

Deliver the diner car to the rear of the lounge car.

OK, nearly there. I’m going to leave the last part up to you now, as you have all the cars within the two sidings and all the “go fetch” part is done.

The final few cars are all around you, but you have to shuffle a couple of them to get the final sequence right.

After the diner car, we need to attach the two transitional sleepers, then split the sight seer cars and insert a smoker car in between.

Keep the last part simple, there’s no complicated movements intended.

Hope you enjoyed marshalling the Nor ‘Easterner.
