work order

----------------------------------------

Work Order: NENJ-LFYD-026-19A-HBS

Time: 07:15 AM

Season: Summer

Weather: Clear

MSTS Difficulty: Hard

Duration:  5 hours 30 minutes (or more -- depends on how you drive)

Train: NERR GP-30 x2 + final consist from NENJ-LFYD-026-18-OAK

Activity Difficulty Level:  5

----------------------------------------

Your work this morning is to continue the train movements from activity NENJ-LFYD-026-18-OAK.  You're departing HBS Yard with the cars picked up there bound for Croxton Yard.  You'll pick cars at Croxton and take them to Oak Island Yard (OIY).  At OIY, you'll build the first of three outbound trains.  Build of the other two trains is performed under activity NENJ-LFYD-026-19B-OIY.

This is the lead-in activity to NENJ-DFDD-088-23A-OIY -- the initial activity of a multi-divisional work order series.

NOTE:  If you do not enjoy intense switching activities, stop NOW!

Speed limits:

Yards: 15 MPH

Main:  As posted, unless otherwise advised by Dispatch.

Other: 15 MPH

Drive Safely!

Operational Notes:

This activity is 98% fully pathed so that the engineer uses reverse points to make almost all movements.  On occasion the engineer will need to set switches manually prior to reaching a reversing point to complete required actions.

I tested this activity extensively on two different systems.  On my P4/2.4 desktop (2GB RAM/128MB Nvidia graphics card), I did not have to 'set down' any of the graphics or sound settings.  On my P4/2.4 laptop (512MB RAM/64MB Nvidia graphics card) I got my best performance by setting Quantity of Sounds to Medium, Visibility to 1000, Terrain Error Threshold to 75, World Object Density to 6, World Objects Quality to 2, and World Objects Texture to 2.  I also disabled dynamic shadows.  I use The latest available version of DirectX.

A couple of hints due to the vagaries of MSTS when working in the yards:

1. Pickup 32771-13 to 11 -- Use reversing point (RP) to track 6. Drop all cars on 6 after clearing RP. Move forward with locos only (follow path, not WO) to track 10 to pickup there BEFORE picking up the cars on track 3. Note that the cars on Track 10 are very sensitive to coupling, even with the rear of the loco -- 1 MPH works consistently (string 32782). Use the RP to get to track 3, then RP to track 1 to do the assemble train instruction.

2. 32812-0 to -10, movement to track 3. (No RP showing on track 3, so I push to the end, then drop). Pull forward onto the ladder track, a RP shows up as you leave track 3, but is the wrong one -- pull forward over the track 4 switch & manually switch back into track 2 to do the next pickup. As you're pulling forward next RP will appear for move to track 6 (get permission for the reds).

3. Setout to track 8 of 32812-25 to -23. If following RP disappears (heading towards south OIY), pull forward until last coal hopper is next to signal, then reverse. RP on track 10 will then be visible. Ensure you push the whole hopper string back far enough to clear the switch.

4. 32811-19 & -18 to track 10. After clearing RP @ south OIY, may need to manually path to track 10 for this setout. Just couple the cars and disconnect, even if the RP here isn't showing.

5. After doing the drop in 4, above (32811-19 & -18 on Track 10), you need to split your track at car 8 before it reaches the switch before the signal leading to north OIY (switches leads to tracks 1-4 of north OIY). Pull forward to clear the reversing point, then back up to pick up the consist (manually switch in as the RP you cleared will have set a path to track 4). Pick up the cars you dropped and pull everything forward to clear the switch. Reset the switch towards track 4 and perform your setouts -- RPs work normally after this.

Note - when completing the activity you may have 2 pick-ups and one assemble train that does not register, this is a quirk of MSTS.

The table below lists the work to be performed.  Because of the limitation of MSTS not all the items below are listed in the activity and many of the below will not register in MSTS but are handled with pop-ups throughout the work order.
