Introduced
in 1939 as EMD's FT demonstrator and arguably the most
successful and famous American diesel locomotive
design of all time, the EMD F-unit almost single
handedly helped usher in the diesel era.
By the end
of WWII, and the diesel firmly established, the
writing was on the wall that the diesel was in and
steam was out. In less than 20 years, nearly all
class-1 American railroads had achieved complete and
total dieselisation
