North Eastern Railroad

New Engineer Orientation

Welcome to North Eastern Railroad's new engineer orientation.

To start your new career at NERR you should familiarize yourself with the following.

What do I need to join?

  1. A love of Trains helps to start.
  2. You should have installed Microsoft Train Simulator on your computer, including all the updates and patches, available from http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsimulator/.
  3. Routes, trains, equipment, and work orders made especially for North Eastern Railroad. We will direct you to the available downloads as you progress through your New Engineer Orientation period.
  4. You should be able to complete 2 NERR work orders a month, do not join and just sit inactive. We don't waste your time, please do not waste ours. It takes away from our fun time. For each new application there is a lot of work being done behind the scenes (yeah, that ol’ paperwork…).
  5. A good spirit of fair play, and cooperation, with non-destructive competition.

Following is the procedure
in order to join the North Eastern Railroad crew of Engineers:

1.      Complete and submit the NERR Engineer’s Application (link below);

2.      You will be sent a copy of your information to the email address that you supplied, so make sure it is correct. You can then log into NETS through the main page, and you will be taken to the orientation centre where you will be able to take the Entrance Exam.

This is an automatic feature, that relies on your correct input. You have to score 75% or better to pass your Entrance Exam, and have your engineer's application accepted.

3.      After passing your Entrance Exam and having your Engineer’s Application accepted, you will be have a number of tasks to perform that will make you familiar with NERR and MSTS. All of the tasks can be accessed through NETS.

This site was created to have all new Applicants work through a number of tasks that are typical of working with North Eastern Railroad. You must be able to complete these tasks successfully before receiving additional password access to the files download area, and other locations of the NERR Website. In the past several ‘new engineers’ were unable to complete basic tasks, and used the forums to ask inappropriate questions. As all of the NERR staff are volunteers on our website, we were unable to spend the amount of time that was needed to guide these ‘new engineers’ and ‘hold their hand’ through a basic equipment or work order install procedure.

4.      At the NERR New Engineer Orientation site you will be given a number of tasks to complete. You can do these tasks in a couple of days or in a couple of weeks.

The tasks will vary from successfully installing a route, equipment, or work order to successfully completing designated work orders. You also will be tested on a variety of topics, including information as contained in the NERR Staff Guidelines Manual and the NERR Operations Manual.

5.      When you successfully complete the New Engineer Orientation, you will receive additional access to the NERR site and forums.

While you are in your New Engineer Orientation Period, make sure you have fun! The tasks you are to complete successfully are typical in the day of a NERR Engineer’s life, and the skills learned during this time will assist you later on while running NERR work orders and performing other duties while ‘employed’ by NERR. All staff are very helpful in assisting you in the process of learning, and will assist you in preparing to become a full fledged NERR employee. Once you are part of NERR staff, you can start working through your Engineer Trainee period. You can only receive Callboard Credit and ‘virtual pay’ for completing NERR Work Orders. And you can work through the various NERR ranks into a Senior NERR position!

Now that you made it this far you may apply for a position at North Eastern Railroad.  After you submit your completed Engineer's Application, you can log into NETS to take your Entrance Exam.  You have to receive a 70% or better to pass your Entrance Exam.
